Onion Udacha

Technical Profile of the 'Udacha' Onion

The 'Udacha' onion variety, developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Rice (breeders S.A. Dyakunchak, N.A. Bogolepova), is designed for stable yields in the mid-late maturity segment. With a growing season of 120–130 days, this variety allows the plant to develop dense, well-matured bulbs with strong storage potential.

Agronomic Metrics and Resistance

• Biological Defense: The variety features high genetic resistance to downy mildew (peronosporosis), which significantly reduces the need for frequent fungicide applications in humid conditions. It also shows consistent performance against powdery mildew, making it a reliable choice for temperate climates.
• Productivity: Potential yields reach up to 50 tons per hectare. This level of output is achievable under optimal agrotechnical management, particularly on well-drained soils that support the plant’s root system development.

Morphology and End-Use

The bulbs are characterized by an oval or elliptical shape, which ensures optimal packing density and efficiency for mechanical harvesting. 'Udacha' is highly versatile: its flavor profile meets the requirements of the fresh market (salad use), while its dense scales and internal structure make it suitable for industrial processing, such as dehydration or canning. The stability of the bulb shape during storage positions this variety as a reliable asset for growers aiming to supply the market outside of peak harvest periods.
