The 'Spring' variety of onion is an early salad onion, also known as 'Paris Spring' or 'Little Paris'. This variety is characterized by its perfectly round bulbs up to 2.5 cm in diameter, white or silver-white color when fully mature, and a sweet, pleasant taste. Onions can be harvested at 7 weeks for pickling or left until 9 weeks for high-quality salad use. It is a winter-hardy variety with high cold resistance, capable of overwintering in the ground and less sensitive to day length, allowing cultivation almost year-round with good yields. Additionally, 'Spring' belongs to the leek-type onion variety, which is the earliest among all onion varieties. Its greens appear immediately after snowmelt, making it an excellent source of fresh greens in early spring. This leek-type onion was introduced from Siberia and has the ability to regrow quickly after cutting, tolerating up to 3-4 cuts per season. Thanks to this, it is an excellent alternative to traditional bulb onion greens and is suitable for growing on windowsills or in greenhouses from late autumn to early spring. Plants of this variety form thick, white, cylindrical stems 12-15 cm long, topped with large, tubular leaves about 15 cm long with a slight waxy coating. The onion tolerates mulching with any clean materials, which promotes the formation of a more elongated and whitened 'stem' with improved sweet flavor and tender texture. These characteristics make the 'Spring' variety versatile and popular for both fresh consumption, pickling, and growing greens indoors.
