Onion Foton

Spanish breeding for the professional market: Foton onion

The Foton variety from Semillas Fito is the result of years of Spanish plant breeding aimed at creating the perfect salad onion that combines visual appeal with exceptional shelf life. In intensive farming conditions, this hybrid has proven to be a reliable tool for achieving stable yields with predictable parameters.

Agronomic characteristics and potential

The main advantage of Foton lies in the balance between culinary quality and storage capacity. Traditionally, salad varieties offer a mild flavor but often lack long-term storability. Semillas Fito has successfully bridged this gap: the bulbs retain their commercial quality for 9–10 months, allowing farmers to schedule sales well into the next season without sacrificing margins.

• Weight metrics: The average bulb weight ranges from 100 to 150 grams, which is the “gold standard” for retail chains and packaging lines.
• Appearance: The round shape and light brown skin give the produce a professional look that is highly valued by end-consumers in supermarkets.
• Application: Due to its texture and flavor profile, the variety is ideal for fresh consumption, fully justifying its “salad” designation.

Choosing Foton is a strategic decision for growers aiming for long-term success. High scale density and resistance to external factors significantly reduce waste during storage, which directly impacts the overall economic efficiency of the agribusiness.
