Lettuce Tambay

Technological Potential of Tambey Lettuce by Rijk Zwaan

Tambey is a leafy lettuce variety developed by Rijk Zwaan that demonstrates a highly specialized approach to crop protection. The core of this variety’s genetics lies in a multi-level resistance system, making it an optimal solution for cultivation under high pathogen pressure.

Comprehensive Protection: The Biotechnological Barrier

The primary engineering feature of Tambey is its ability to mitigate risks that most frequently lead to loss of marketability. Rijk Zwaan breeders have focused on three critical threats:

• Downy Mildew (Bremia lactucae): A high threshold of resistance to all current races of the fungus allows for a significant reduction in fungicide applications, maintaining product sustainability.
• Internal Necrosis: The specific architecture of the leaf blade and the plant's adapted metabolism minimize the risk of tissue necrosis, which is critical for extended shelf life.
• Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV): Genetic protection eliminates leaf deformation and chlorosis, ensuring a consistent, deep dark green color throughout the harvest.

Agronomic Advantages

The early maturity of this hybrid allows for an intensified crop rotation, enabling more production cycles within a single season. The leaf type of the plant is engineered for maximum photosynthetic efficiency: the dense rosette structure allows for a deep dark green color, which is highly sought after in retail markets. The reduced need for aggressive chemical inputs makes it an ideal choice for professional greenhouses and open-field farming, where a high marketable yield is paramount.
