Lettuce Damion

Technological potential of the Iceberg variety "Damion"

Enza Limited's breeding efforts in the head lettuce segment focus on addressing the major challenge of industrial greenhouses and open-field cultivation: physiological necrosis. The "Damion" hybrid is a balanced Iceberg model, where the focus is placed on tissue resistance to environmental stressors.

Defense mechanism and resistance

The main technical feature of "Damion" is its pronounced tolerance to Tipburn. The solution is based on an optimized genetic profile that ensures uniform calcium distribution in the tissues during rapid temperature and humidity fluctuations. This minimizes marketable produce losses during the final ripening stage, when the plant is most vulnerable.

Phytosanitary profile

Comprehensive plant protection includes resistance genes against key pathogens that threaten crop yield:

• Downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) — blocking fungal infection spread at early stages.
• Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV) — resistance to major strains, ensuring the purity of the commercial head.
• Brown leaf spot — an effective barrier against bacterial infections, which is critical during storage and logistics.

Agronomic characteristics

The plant forms a large, dense head of a perfect round shape with a deep green color. The Iceberg type here is realized through a firm leaf structure that retains its crunchy texture even after mechanical harvesting. The medium-early maturity allows for flexible supply scheduling, optimizing land use throughout the season. "Damion" is predictable in development, making it the preferred choice for operations focused on standardizing packaging quality and maximizing shelf life.
