Lettuce Chapman

Stable yields with Chapman lettuce in protected and open field conditions

For growers serving the fresh market who prioritize predictability, the Chapman variety by Rijk Zwaan has become a benchmark for reliability. This Lollo Rossa type lettuce is favored for its intense dark green color, which remains vibrant even under heat stress, and its high marketability.

Technical advantages and crop protection

The primary challenge in lettuce production is minimizing crop loss due to disease. Chapman possesses a robust genetic immunity, allowing for a significant reduction in fungicide and insecticide usage. Key resistance traits include:

• Downy Mildew (BL:16-36EU): High-level resistance even in high-humidity conditions.
• Lettuce Aphid (Nr:0): Built-in biological protection against one of the most persistent leafy vegetable pests.
• Fusarium and Powdery Mildew: Rijk Zwaan’s breeding ensures that Chapman maintains vigorous root system and leaf development without the threat of these common pathogens.

Practical application on the farm

This hybrid fits perfectly into a continuous harvest cycle. Thanks to its stable rosette structure, it is ideal for both plastic tunnels and open field production during the spring and autumn seasons. Agronomists value it for several reasons:

• Ease of harvesting: The dense, compact structure allows for rapid cutting without damaging adjacent plants.
• Market quality: The deep dark green color makes the lettuce highly attractive on retail shelves, while high leaf density ensures excellent shelf life during transportation.
• Seasonal flexibility: The plant shows remarkable adaptability to changing day length, which is crucial for cultivation in unpredictable weather conditions.

If your goal is to produce high-quality, market-ready lettuce with minimal chemical interventions, Chapman is the optimal choice for your crop rotation strategy.
