Lettuce Cassiopeia

Prioritizing Buttery Texture and Vibrant Color

The 'Cassiopeia' lettuce, developed by the Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production (VNIISSOK), is engineered for producers targeting the premium market segment. Unlike standard green varieties, this butterhead lettuce features an intense red leaf coloration. With a medium ripening cycle, it fits seamlessly into continuous harvesting schedules.

Practical Field and Greenhouse Applications

• Mix-Salad Production: Given its compact size and striking color, 'Cassiopeia' serves as a flagship component for high-end convenience packs (baby-leaf and mixed greens). Growers leverage it to create visually appealing mixes that demand a strong contrast between green and red foliage.
• Controlled Environment Agriculture: Because of the smaller head weight, this variety performs exceptionally well in hydroponic systems and greenhouses. High-density planting significantly improves space utilization, and the compact nature of the rosette reduces logistics and packaging costs, as the product is often sold in individual pots or trays.
• HoReCa Segment: The restaurant industry prioritizes both aesthetics and mouthfeel. The buttery texture of 'Cassiopeia' leaves ensures a tender bite without the bitter notes found in crisper varieties, making it a reliable ingredient for signature salads.

From an agronomical standpoint, managing irrigation is critical for this butterhead type. Excessive humidity during the head-formation phase can lead to rot in the lower leaves; therefore, precision drip irrigation is highly recommended. The predictable medium-ripening timeframe allows farmers to plan harvest windows accurately, minimizing the risk of overgrowth and shelf-life loss.
