Lettuce Cartagenas

Technological Features of the Cartagenas Hybrid

Rijk Zwaan's breeding efforts in the Iceberg lettuce segment are focused on achieving a balance between crop plasticity and pathogen resistance. Cartagenas is the result of years of adapting the cultivar type to the conditions of intensive vegetable production. The key feature of this hybrid lies in its genetic architecture, which is oriented towards protection against a wide spectrum of phytopathogens—critical for obtaining a marketable head during periods of high infectious pressure.

Phytosanitary Profile and Development

One of the most complex challenges in lettuce cultivation is the control of fungal diseases. Cartagenas implements a comprehensive approach to immunity:

• Powdery Mildew Resistance: The genetic complex prevents mycelial growth on the leaf surface, eliminating the need for aggressive fungicide applications during the late stages of vegetation.
• Brown Spot Protection: The hybrid shows high resistance to necrotic tissue lesions, maintaining its market quality even under high humidity and temperature fluctuations, which often trigger spot disease outbreaks.

Agronomic Value of the Head

The Iceberg type requires not only head density from the plant but also correct internal structural geometry. Cartagenas forms a medium-sized head with optimal density. From a logistics and sales perspective, this ensures structural integrity during transport. The light green leaf color typical of this hybrid is a market standard for fresh consumption. The medium maturity timeline allows agronomists to effectively plan staggered supply chains throughout the season, minimizing the risk of crop over-maturation.

The technological value of this hybrid lies in its harvest predictability. Rijk Zwaan has prioritized head uniformity, allowing for a single-pass harvest, which lowers the operational costs in the field.
