Carmesi salad is a popular loose-leaf variety of Lollo Rossa type, developed by the Dutch company Rijk Zwaan. This variety features a large open rosette with medium-density leaves that have a vivid burgundy, "triple red" coloration. The leaves are slightly blistered, crisp, juicy, and possess a delicate, pleasant flavor, making Carmesi an ideal choice for fresh salads. The plant reaches a weight of 300 to 500 grams, forming an attractive and appetizing green.
Carmesi is characterized by its very early maturity — the vegetation period lasts 45-55 days. The variety exhibits high growth speed, cold resistance, and adaptability to various growing conditions. It is suitable for cultivation both in open ground and in greenhouse conditions, including hydroponic systems. In southern regions, plantings are recommended in spring and autumn to avoid the negative effects of extreme summer temperatures. In central and western regions, it can be grown in open ground from early spring to autumn, as well as year-round in protected environments.
The variety shows high resistance to diseases, including downy mildew (Bremia lactucae, races 1-16, 19, 21, 23), internal necrosis, and lettuce aphids. Thanks to its high plasticity and extended harvest period, Carmesi ensures a stable and high-quality product with a long storage life and good transportability. Regular and properly dosed watering, soil loosening, weed control, and thinning of seedlings are necessary for successful cultivation. This salad has beneficial dietary properties and is an excellent choice for fresh consumption.
