Sainfoin Kostiantyn

A Reliable Choice for Forage and Crop Rotation

The 'Kostiantyn' sainfoin variety is a product of Ukrainian selection, developed by experts at the Kirovohrad Institute of Agro-Industrial Production of the NAAS. This variety emerged as a strategic solution for farmers seeking a crop capable of maintaining productivity under challenging and fluctuating climatic conditions. Over the years, it has established itself in crop rotations as a dependable source of high-quality protein forage and an effective tool for soil fertility restoration.

Agronomic Profile and Yield Potential

‘Kostiantyn’ demonstrates exceptional adaptability to arid conditions, making it an ideal choice for the southern and central agricultural regions of Ukraine. The variety is designed for multi-purpose use, effectively combining the roles of a forage base and a biological soil amendment.

• Forage Quality: The stable yield of green mass ranges from 30 to 45 tons per hectare. Sainfoin is rich in protein, and its lack of tendency to cause bloat in ruminants makes it a safer dietary component compared to alfalfa.
• Honey Production: High nectar concentration makes this variety highly valued in apiculture, supporting the production of high-quality early-season honey.
• Field Characteristics: The thousand-seed weight (TSW) is 18–25 grams, ensuring vigorous germination and a strong initial establishment.

Role in Sustainable Agriculture

As a green manure crop, ‘Kostiantyn’ is widely used to enhance soil structure. Its deep root system loosens compacted subsoil horizons and fixes a significant amount of organic nitrogen. This makes it an indispensable component of conservation agriculture, particularly on land requiring reclamation or humus accumulation without reliance on synthetic mineral fertilizers.
