Alfalfa Yantarna

Resilient Alfalfa for Stable Forage Production

The 'Yantarna' alfalfa variety, developed by the National Scientific Center 'Institute of Agriculture of NAAS', is a prominent example of Ukrainian breeding aimed at endurance and consistent performance. Unlike many imported intensive hybrids that require near-perfect conditions, 'Yantarna' is specifically engineered for resilience within the variable climatic zones of Ukraine.

Agronomic Profile

• Type: Sowing alfalfa variety.
• Plant height: 60–90 cm, providing an ideal ratio of vegetative mass to feed units.
• Originator: NSC 'Institute of Agriculture of NAAS'.
• Country: Ukraine.

The primary advantage of this variety is its rapid regrowth cycle and cold tolerance. It thrives in typical Ukrainian soil conditions, maintaining high sward density for 4–5 years of operation. This longevity is a significant economic benefit, as it reduces the frequency of field reseeding. The variety excels in its ability to withstand winter frost and early spring temperature fluctuations, making it a reliable performer in steppe and forest-steppe regions.

Competitive Edge and Usage

Why choose 'Yantarna'? It offers a unique balance between input requirements and yield stability. While intensive hybrids may provide higher yields under optimal irrigation and high-input fertilization, 'Yantarna' delivers a predictable output even in moderate agronomic conditions. It is an optimal choice for livestock farms looking to secure a consistent high-protein forage base without the risks associated with finicky international varieties.

Key considerations: Success with 'Yantarna' depends on the timing of the cut. To maximize crude protein content, harvesting must occur at the beginning of the budding phase. Delaying the cut results in stem lignification, which reduces feed value. For producers who prioritize durability and adaptation over short-term maximum yield, 'Yantarna' remains one of the most reliable options available on the Ukrainian market.
