Podbel'skaya cherry is an old German variety bred in the 19th century by crossing the Griot Ostheimskaya and Lotovaya varieties. The tree is medium-sized, reaching a height of up to 4-5 meters, with a wide, well-leafed crown that becomes more flat with age. Fruiting begins in the 3-4 year after planting, and the yield of adult trees reaches 40-60 kg per season. The variety is characterized by high frost resistance and is adapted for growing in southern and moderately warm regions. Pollinators are necessary for successful fruiting, among which the most effective varieties are Lotovaya, English Early, Griot Ostheimskaya, and others. Podbel'skaya fruits are large, weighing from 4 to 7 grams, round or flat-round in shape with a shiny dark red skin that acquires an almost black shade upon ripening. The flesh is a rich red color, juicy, tender, and dense, with a harmonious sour-sweet taste and a light spicy bitterness. The pit is large and separates freely from the flesh. Berries ripen unevenly, starting from the end of June to early July, at which point ripe fruits hold well on the tree and do not fall off, which facilitates harvesting. The Podbel'skaya variety is valued for its high and regular yield, which increases with the age of the trees. Due to its taste qualities and resistance to climatic conditions, the cherry is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing and preserves. The presence of suitable pollinators nearby significantly increases yield, which makes this variety attractive for industrial cultivation and private gardeners.
