Description
Bluejay (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Blue Jay') — a tall variety of northern blueberry, developed at the University of Michigan in 1978. Bushes grow up to 1.5–2 meters tall, forming upright, sturdy plants with glossy dark green leaves that turn red in autumn, adding ornamental value. This variety is highly cold-resistant, tolerating temperatures down to -30/-33 °C, and disease-resistant, including moniliosis, making it a reliable choice for home gardens and cold-climate regions. Bluejay berries are medium-sized, weighing about 2–2.5 grams, light-blue in color, densely packed on large clusters. The berries have a delicate sweet flavor with a slight tartness and a flavor reminiscent of bilberries. They are resistant to splitting and remain on the bush for a long time, allowing for an extended harvest season. Due to their good transportability, the berries are suitable for both fresh consumption and processing — making jams, pies, and canning. Bluejay is a mid-season variety, ripening in July and bearing fruit over several weeks. The plant is self-pollinating, but for increased yield, it is recommended to plant a second bush nearby for cross-pollination. The bushes bloom with white flowers in May and require regular watering, especially during droughts, as the variety does not tolerate excessive dryness. For successful cultivation, Bluejay prefers sunny, sheltered locations with light, nutrient-rich, acidic soils, as well as timely pruning to maintain vigor and fruiting.
