Chandler

Chandler blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Chandler') is a northern, tall, spreading shrub reaching 1.5 to 2 meters in height. This variety was developed in 1994 in North America and Canada, and has since gained popularity due to its large, juicy, and sweet berries. The bushes have strong, flexible branches and deep green, pointed leaves that may change color in case of nutrient deficiency, serving as a signal for plant care. Chandler blueberry is cold-resistant and can withstand temperatures down to -25 to -34°C, making it suitable for cultivation in cool-climate regions with little snow. Chandler berries are particularly large — berry diameter usually exceeds 2 cm, and weight reaches about 2 grams, with some berries exceeding 2.5 cm in diameter. The berries have a deep blue color with a characteristic light waxy coating, dense flesh, and sweet taste with a slight tartness. The fruit ripening period lasts up to 4–6 weeks, starting in August and ending in September, allowing for gradual harvesting and increased overall yield. Due to these qualities, the Chandler variety is often compared to the Bonus variety, only slightly inferior in berry size. Chandler blueberry is excellent for fresh consumption as well as culinary use, including baking. It is self-pollinating, which simplifies care and increases yield stability. Due to its high yield and attractive large berries, this variety is in demand both in private gardens and in commercial horticulture, especially on small family plantations where berries are harvested by hand. Plant care requires attention to leaf condition and timely fertilization, which helps maintain plant health and fruit quality.
