Bird Cherry Donbass Lights

Architecture and Habit: Compactness as a Design Tool

The 'Vogni Donbasu' (Lights of Donbas) bird cherry is a product of breeding research at the M.M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden, designed to optimize aesthetic output in constrained spaces. Standing 2–4 meters tall, this mid-sized plant is specifically engineered for landscape architecture in residential gardens and urban corridors. Unlike standard wild-type bird cherries, this variety exhibits a tightly structured, compact crown that resists sprawl, significantly reducing the need for aggressive pruning to maintain form.

Biological Resource: Focus on Decorative Utility

The primary breeding objective for this variety was intensive flowering. Its genetic profile is tuned for the formation of dense racemes, positioning the tree as a centerpiece of garden design during the growth season. Adaptive mechanisms integrated by the breeders ensure high tolerance for varying soil compositions: the plant efficiently utilizes available nutrients in diverse soil types, which substantially lowers the intensity of required agro-technical maintenance.

Operational Specifications

• Height: 2–4 meters (medium stature simplifies maintenance).
• Crown Form: Compact — resistance to dense foliage overgrowth, promoting superior air circulation and reducing susceptibility to fungal pathogens.
• Soil Plasticity: Low sensitivity to substrate composition, making it a versatile tool for landscaping in areas with marginal soil quality.

Incorporating this variety into landscaping projects is a strategic choice for minimizing long-term maintenance costs while ensuring high-impact visual aesthetics.
