The Prunus padus (bird cherry) variety known as «Stroynaya» is the result of extensive work by plant breeders at the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the SB RAS and the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR). This variety was developed to meet the demand of landscape designers for compact, vertical woody forms that can withstand harsh climates while maintaining a high aesthetic standard.

Architectural Garden Aesthetics

The defining characteristic of «Stroynaya» is its distinct columnar crown. Unlike wild species, which often grow in a sprawling or irregular manner, this variety maintains a strict vertical silhouette, reaching heights of 2–4 meters. This structural trait makes the plant an excellent choice for alleyways, zoning private gardens, or enhancing narrow urban spaces where a wider canopy would be impractical.

Cultivation and Productivity

• Soil Requirements: The variety requires fertile, moisture-retaining soil with good drainage to fully express its ornamental and productive potential.
• Early Maturation: The plant typically enters its fruiting phase within 2–3 years of planting, making it an efficient choice for ornamental woody landscapes.
• Harvesting: The black fruits are characteristic of the Prunus padus species, and their collection is significantly simplified by the tree’s ergonomic, medium-sized columnar structure.
