Bird Cherry Lessa Ukrainka

Genetic Potential and Adaptability

The 'Lesya Ukrainka' bird cherry, developed by breeders at the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden, is the product of selective breeding focused on balancing aesthetic appeal with structural resilience. Unlike wild forms, this variety exhibits a stable habit at a height of 2–4 meters, making it an optimal solution for various landscaping applications.

Technical Specifications for Hardiness and Resistance

• Climatic Tolerance: A critical frost resistance threshold of down to -35°C allows the plant to thrive in most regions without the risk of losing flower buds or structural branches.
• Phytosanitary Profile: Strong innate immunity to pathogens common to the Padus genus significantly reduces the need for preventive fungicide treatments.
• Hydrobalance: Selective breeding for drought resistance ensures optimal tissue function even during periods of soil moisture deficit, a critical factor for urban greening projects.

Practical Landscape Application

The primary advantage of 'Lesya Ukrainka' lies in its decorative flowering, which creates a powerful visual focal point. Its medium-sized structure makes it ideal for use as a foundation for hedges—due to dense branching and predictable growth height, the variety handles pruning and shaping exceptionally well. This is a technically sound choice for gardeners and landscape architects seeking a specimen that requires minimal agrotechnical maintenance once established in its permanent location.
