Summer variety selected by the Southern Ural Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing and Potato Cultivation. Obtained from seedlings of a large-fruited apple tree through open pollination. One of the best summer apple varieties. Widely distributed and officially approved for cultivation in the Ural region. Author: P. A. Zhavoronkov.
Tree is a sturdy, bushy stem with a sparse, wide-round crown. Bark on the stem and main branches is brown. Fruit production occurs on all types of fruit-bearing wood, often on growths from the previous year.
Shoots have light-brown bark and are thin. Leaves are large, elongated, slightly pointed, dark green. Leaf surface is wrinkled and matte. Leaf blade is flat, slightly hairy. Leaf margin is finely serrated, wavy, curled upward. Petiole is short.
Flowers are fairly large, cup-shaped, white-pink, with medium-length, hairless stigmas, the stigmas positioned at the same level as the anthers.
Fruits (see illustration) are medium-sized, single-ribbed, rounded-conical with slight ribbing. Skin is smooth, dry, with a waxy coating, greenish-white with a red striped blush covering the entire fruit. Peduncle is medium length and thickness, angled. Calyx is acute-conical, small, rust-colored. Receptacle is of medium depth.
Flesh is white, loose, finely textured, juicy, tart-sweet with a very pleasant aroma, excellent flavor. Chemical composition of the fruit: 13.8% soluble solids, 10.0% sugars, 0.75% titratable acids, up to 16 mg/100g ascorbic acid.
Fruit quality is good, including 15-20% of premium grade fruits, 35-40% first grade. Fruits store for up to 2 weeks. Transportability is moderate.
Fruits are suitable for fresh consumption and are good for processing: compotes, jams.
Requires pollinators, among which the best are 'Prize', 'Creamy Chinese', 'Miass'.
Trees begin fruiting on the 5th-6th year after planting and produce marketable yields within 1-2 years. Fruit set is regular. Fruit drop is moderate.
High productivity: under normal conditions, average multi-year yields exceed 200 centners per hectare.
High winter hardiness. The variety is adaptable and resistant to scab; in epidemic years, infection does not exceed 2 points.
Advantages of the variety: high ecological adaptability, high yield, good fruit quality, very early fruit ripening, suitability for fresh consumption and processing products.
Disadvantages of the variety: short fruit storage life, partial fruit drop in fruits not yet at harvest maturity.
Widely used in breeding for developing winter-hardy summer apple varieties.
