Black flies

Adult flies typically measure 1–6 mm in length. Their coloration ranges from grey to black, which often helps them blend into dark tree bark or soil during early morning hours when they are most active.

The life cycle is strictly dependent on flowing water. Females lay eggs on submerged vegetation, rocks, or other substrates in streams and rivers, which are essential for larval development.
