Their size allows them to bypass traditional fly screens, making them particularly difficult to manage in both housing environments and open pasture settings.
The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females of most species are obligate blood-feeders, requiring a blood meal to facilitate egg development. Larvae thrive in high-moisture environments, including muddy soils, decaying plant matter, and animal manure, which are common features in many agricultural landscapes.
The primary economic impact is the direct harm caused to livestock. Infestations result in decreased weight gain, reduced milk production, and allergic dermatitis. Furthermore, they are critical vectors for viral diseases such as Bluetongue virus and African Horse Sickness, which can lead to devastating losses in the livestock industry.
