Host plants. These pests demonstrate a preference for a variety of perennial plants, with a strong focus on the Rosaceae family, including apple, pear, and plum trees. Furthermore, various herbaceous plants and aromatic species can serve as hosts, allowing the pest to propagate across diverse agricultural environments and garden settings.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most damaging, during which the caterpillars feed extensively on the foliage. After maturation, the larvae spin silk cocoons to pupate, often concealed within the folds of damaged leaves or in the crevices of tree bark to protect themselves from predators.
Damage and economic significance. Infestations manifest as skeletonized leaves, webbing, and leaf-rolling behavior. This damage restricts the plant's ability to photosynthesize efficiently, leading to reduced vigor and, in severe cases, significant yield loss. Economic damage is particularly high when young orchards are attacked, as stunted growth can have long-term consequences for tree health.
Protection measures. Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring using pheromone traps is essential for timing the application of contact or systemic insecticides. Additionally, maintaining orchard hygiene, such as clearing debris and pruning affected branches, helps to reduce the overwintering population of the pest, ensuring long-term crop protection.
