These pests have a broad host range, feeding on various plants including agricultural crops like cereals, legumes, and several horticultural plants. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap, they deplete the plant of essential nutrients. While some species are minor pests, others can cause substantial economic losses in intensive farming systems if their populations are not managed correctly.
The life cycle of Rhopalidae involves hemimetabolous metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, nymphal stages, and adults. They typically complete one or more generations per year depending on the climate. Adults hibernate in protected environments, such as leaf litter, dried weeds, or under the bark of trees, which allows them to endure winter conditions and emerge early in the spring to colonize new vegetation.
Damage caused by these bugs includes yellowing or wilting of leaves, stunted growth of stems, and, in severe cases, the drying out of entire branches. The feeding process leaves behind chlorotic spots due to the injection of digestive enzymes. This not only impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize but also makes the plant more susceptible to secondary infections by bacteria or fungi.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control Rhopalidae populations. Key strategies include:
