Seed chalcids (Eurytomidae)

These pests target a variety of crops including wheat, barley, alfalfa, and clover. The larva feeds inside the seed, consuming the embryo and endosperm. This feeding behavior destroys the nutritional content of the seed, rendering it incapable of germination and significantly reducing the total yield weight and commercial value of the crop.

The life cycle of Eurytomidae is highly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. They typically overwinter as diapausing larvae inside infested seeds left in the field or in storage.
