The orchid wasp (Eurytoma orchidearum) is a small hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Eurytomidae. Adult wasps are tiny, black insects, usually measuring about 2–3 mm in length, with a robust body structure.
Adults are characterized by a shiny black exoskeleton and transparent wings with simplified venation. Despite their small size, they are formidable pests because they complete their life cycle hidden inside plant tissues.
The larvae of the orchid wasp are legless, cream-colored, and possess a distinct head. They spend their entire developmental phase feeding inside the stems and buds of the host plant.
Females use their ovipositors to pierce the succulent tissues of young orchid shoots or pseudobulbs to deposit their eggs. This process is rarely witnessed by growers, leading to late identification.
These wasps thrive in warm, humid environments, making home orchid collections and greenhouses perfect habitats for their rapid population growth.
What it damages
The primary hosts for the orchid wasp include sympodial orchids, particularly the genera Cattleya and Laelia. The insects specifically target young, tender, and rapidly growing tissues.
As the larvae feed, they tunnel through the inner tissues of the plant. This feeding activity stimulates the plant to form characteristic galls or swellings, providing a protected chamber for the wasp's development.
Affected shoots suffer from severe deformity and structural damage. The plant's ability to store nutrients in the pseudobulbs is compromised, often leading to the premature death of the affected parts.
An infestation significantly stresses the plant, reducing its vigor and increasing susceptibility to secondary pathogens like fungal or bacterial rots. Infected flower buds almost never bloom successfully.
A widespread infestation can devastate an entire collection, as the internal nature of the damage makes the pest extremely difficult to combat once it has established itself.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of an orchid wasp infestation is the presence of atypical swellings or galls on new growth, such as shoots or pseudobulbs. These areas look unnatural compared to healthy tissue.
Small, round exit holes on the surface of these swellings are a definite indicator that adult wasps have emerged from the plant. This signals that at least one generation has completed its cycle.
General growth inhibition, yellowing of new shoots, and premature drying of the plant are common symptoms. Cutting open a gall usually reveals internal cavities containing larvae or pupae.
Sudden death of flower spikes is another frequent sign. In many cases, the spike is hollowed out by the larvae, which owners may mistake for a localized rot rather than an insect infestation.
Routine inspection of the base of pseudobulbs and leaf sheaths using a magnifying glass is essential for early detection, as it allows for prompt removal of infested parts before the wasps emerge.
Control measures
The most effective strategy is the immediate removal and destruction of all infested plant parts. Swellings should be cut off until clean, healthy tissue is reached and disposed of away from the collection.
Sanitizing all cutting tools after use is mandatory. Wiping blades with isopropyl alcohol or heat-sterilizing them prevents the accidental spread of eggs or larvae to healthy orchids.
Applying systemic insecticides is necessary to treat the internal parts of the plant. Products containing imidacloprid or abamectin are often recommended as they are absorbed into the plant tissue.
Multiple treatment cycles are required, spaced according to the insect's life cycle, to ensure that emerging adults are eliminated before they have the chance to lay eggs for the next generation.
Strict quarantine procedures for new arrivals are the best preventive measure. Keep any new orchid isolated from the main collection for at least 30 days to observe for any signs of hidden wasp infestation.
