The life cycle involves the formation of resting spores which can survive in the soil for several years. Under moist conditions, these spores release zoospores that migrate through soil water to infect host roots.
Upon infection, the fungus causes abnormal proliferation of host cells, resulting in the characteristic gall-like growths on the root system. This process is driven by the internal development of the fungus within the plant tissue.
It is classified as an obligate parasite, meaning it requires a living host to complete its life cycle. It does not survive as a saprophyte on dead organic matter for long periods.
This pathogen prefers high humidity and waterlogged soil conditions, as its zoospores require a film of water to move effectively and reach the root surface of the crop.
The damage caused by Urophlyctis leproides primarily involves the severe deformation of the taproot. This significantly reduces the marketable yield and quality of the beet crop.
Infected plants exhibit stunted growth and decreased vigor. The vascular system of the root is disrupted by the galls, hindering the transport of water and nutrients to the leaves.
Roots affected by the gall fungus are highly susceptible to secondary rots caused by bacteria and other soil fungi during the storage period, leading to substantial post-harvest losses.
Fields infested with this pathogen may become unsuitable for beet production for several seasons. This leads to economic constraints, especially for farms specialized in sugar beet or fodder beet cultivation.
In cases of early and severe infection, young seedlings may wither and die, causing significant gaps in the field stand and necessitating replanting.
The most visible symptom of beet root gall is the development of irregular, fleshy, or warty outgrowths on the surface of the root. These galls can range from small bumps to large, deformed masses.
Initial galls appear as light-colored swellings. As they mature, the tissue can turn brownish or dark, sometimes appearing necrotic or dry due to secondary colonization by other microbes.
The root neck is a common site for gall formation, which can severely distort the plant's architecture. The overall appearance of the infected root becomes uncharacteristic and often grotesque.
Above-ground signs include leaf yellowing and wilting, particularly during dry or hot periods when the damaged root cannot meet the transpiration demand of the plant.

Weed control is essential, as wild relatives of beets can serve as alternate hosts, allowing the pathogen to persist even when cultivated crops are absent.
While chemical options are limited, the use of certified healthy planting material and avoiding the use of contaminated manure are necessary preventive practices.
