This pathogen prefers high humidity and moderate temperatures for optimal development. It is particularly active during periods of prolonged damp weather, which facilitate the germination of spores and the subsequent colonization of host plant tissues.

As a facultative parasite, the fungus maintains a saprotrophic life cycle on dead plant material in the soil. This allows it to persist in the environment for extended periods, serving as a constant source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons.

In stored produce, the symptoms manifest as dark, depressed lesions that may gradually cover large portions of the fruit. In humid storage conditions, these lesions can develop a fuzzy fungal growth, leading to rapid degradation of the harvested stock.

Integrated management is crucial for controlling Strasseria geniculata. The most effective cultural control is the thorough incorporation of crop residues into the soil. Deep plowing buries the inoculum, speeding up decomposition and preventing the fungus from surviving the winter.

Crop rotation remains a fundamental practice. By alternating susceptible crops with non-host species, growers can significantly reduce the pathogen population in the soil. This disrupts the lifecycle of the fungus and prevents the buildup of infection over multiple years.
