Systematically, this organism is classified within the kingdom Fungi, class Dothideomycetes. The pathogen is a typical representative of fungi causing necrotic leaf spot diseases, which often result in premature defoliation.
The mycological structure of the fungus involves the formation of conidial sporulation directly within the tissues of the infected leaves. Spores are primarily dispersed passively via air currents and water splashes from rainfall.
Identification of the pathogen in laboratory settings is performed through microscopic analysis of the sporulation, which displays characteristic anamorphic features specific to the Stigmina genus. Direct observation is possible using moist chamber methods.
While this phytopathogen does not pose a direct threat to agricultural crops, it is a significant nuisance in ornamental horticulture and landscape management, as it reduces the aesthetic value of park plantings.
What it damages
The primary host for this pathogen is the American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). The disease typically manifests under specific environmental conditions, particularly in dense plantings where canopy airflow is restricted.
The infection targets exclusively the leaf blades of the plant. Damage begins as isolated spots, which gradually expand, disrupting the photosynthetic processes within the affected tissues and impairing tree health.
Under conditions of high humidity and in the absence of management, the pathogen can infect a significant portion of the tree canopy. This weakens the plant's overall vitality, which is especially critical for young nursery specimens.
Severe infection triggers leaf deformation and premature leaf drop. As a result of early defoliation, the tree fails to prepare adequately for the winter dormancy period, which reduces its overall winter hardiness.

In areas with high disease pressure, the application of fungicides is recommended. Copper-based products or systemic broad-spectrum fungicides applied during the active growth phase are usually most effective.
