Grain. Year of inclusion in the State Register of plant varieties suitable for propagation in Ukraine — 2012. Recommended cultivation zone: Steppe.
Originator — Institute of Plant Sciences named after V. Ya. Yuryev, NAAN.
Variety distinguishing features. First in Ukraine, oatless barley variety — inerme (inerme). Plants of medium height (88 — 110 cm). Instead of awns, the outer glumes have tooth-like projections. Spike is two-rowed, has a strong waxy coating, pyramidal, loose (11.2 nodes per 4 cm), medium length (8.8 cm). Sterile spikelet occupies a parallel position. Glumes are rough-textured, with weakly expressed venation. Grain is elongated-elliptical, yellow, membranous. Main awn is long-haired. 1000-grain weight 45 — 49 g.
Biological characteristics. Maturity group — medium-early, vegetation period 87–97 days. Resistant to lodging (7.8 — 8.5 points), very resistant to drought (9.0 points). Variety is a source of complex resistance to pathogens of powdery mildew and septoria (9 points), net-like helminthosporium (7 points), and damage by stem-boring pests (8 points). Productive tillering rate 1.8 stems.
Agronomic characteristics. Semi-intensive type. Recommended seeding rate 4.0 — 4.5 million germinating seeds per hectare. Agronomic practices are standard for the cultivation zone, early sowing dates.
In the variety trial conducted by the Institute of Plant Sciences named after V. Ya. Yuryev, NAAN, the yield of variety Modern exceeded the standard Galaktik by 0.62 t/ha (12%) at a level of 5.88 t/ha. Potential yield 8.5 — 9.0 t/ha. Protein content in grain 12.9 — 14.9%. Yield of conditioned seeds 75 — 85%.
Patent No. 120018. State registration number 08012010.
