The columnar apple tree Trident (Tramin) is a dwarf variety of English origin, ideal for both home and commercial cultivation. The tree is characterized by its low growth and compactness, reaching a height of 2-2.5 meters by the 3rd-4th year. The crown can be shaped in various ways — columnar, bowl-shaped, pyramidal, or spherical — making it convenient for growing in containers and pots, as well as for decorative purposes. The lateral branches grow at a moderate rate, about 10-15 cm per year, and fruiting occurs mainly on spurs and fruiting branches.
The fruits of the Trident apple are medium-sized, weighing 120-150 grams, with a yellow-green color and a dark red or pinkish blush. The flesh is milky-white, medium density, finely-grained, juicy, and crisp. The taste is pleasantly tart-sweet, confirmed by a high tasting score of 4.5 points. The variety is mid-late, with fruit ripening in the second half of September. The apples are versatile, suitable for fresh consumption as well as for desserts. After harvest, the fruits continue to ripen off the tree for 2-3 months and have high storability — they can be stored until January under normal conditions, and up to February-March in a refrigerator.
The Trident variety is highly winter-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -27…-30 degrees Celsius, and is resistant to diseases, particularly powdery mildew, although its resistance to scab is moderate. Yield increases each year: from less than 1 kg in the first season to 10 kg per tree by the 4th-5th year after planting. Due to its characteristics and low maintenance requirements, the Trident apple is one of the best choices for gardeners seeking a high-quality and consistent yield on limited space.
