Apple D-471

Stability and Reliability: The D-471 Apple Variety

The breeding programs of the Artemivska Research Station of Horticulture have always focused on creating varieties capable of providing predictable yields in the Ukrainian climate. D-471 is a prime example of a variety where the emphasis is placed on functionality and tree resilience rather than sheer fruit size.

Technical Specifications

D-471 is considered a classic variety suitable for both intensive orchards and home gardens. The core characteristics are:

• Fruit weight: 50–100 grams;
• Base color: attractive yellowish-green;
• Flesh: tender, light cream in color.

The compact size of the fruit (50–100 g) is often seen as a significant advantage in modern food processing. It is perfectly suited for baby food production, dried fruit, or as a convenient snack-sized portion.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The key differentiator of D-471 compared to large-fruited analogs is its high adaptability to local growing conditions. Developed by the experts at the Artemivska Research Station, the variety demonstrates excellent winter hardiness and resistance to common regional fruit tree diseases. This makes it an optimal choice for farmers looking to reduce orchard maintenance costs and chemical inputs.

The main drawback—the relatively small fruit size—might limit its success in the "fresh market" segment, where consumers often prioritize larger calibers. However, for producers focused on processing or those seeking low-maintenance, ecologically stable cultivation, D-471 offers much higher efficiency than many demanding high-profile varieties that require constant intensive care.
