Gala

Apple tree variety Gala — a high-yielding late-autumn variety developed in New Zealand in 1957. Trees are medium-sized with oval-spherical or pyramidal crowns, beginning to bear fruit as early as the 2nd–3rd year after planting, especially when grafted onto the semi-dwarf rootstock 54-118. The variety is known for its early fruiting and high productivity, making it popular both for private gardeners and commercial cultivation. For successful growth, it is recommended to plant trees on open, sunny sites with fertile loamy soils, following a planting scheme of 3x3 meters. The Gala apple fruits are medium-sized, weighing from 115 to 145 grams, with round or round-conical shapes. Their skin is yellow with a blurred orange-red blush and small light lenticels. The flesh is dense, juicy, yellow in color, with an excellent taste — sweet with a slight acidity and a refined caramel aroma. Apples have good transportability and market appearance, allowing them to be stored fresh for 2–4 months. The Gala variety exhibits moderate resistance to scab and powdery mildew, as well as moderate winter hardiness. It has high cold and drought tolerance, making it adaptable to various climatic conditions. The apple tree is not self-fertile, so pollinators are required for full fruiting. Due to its excellent taste, attractive appearance, and versatility, the Gala variety enjoys deserved popularity among gardeners and fruit producers.
