A 2025 German breeding innovation combining high adaptability to the Ukrainian climate with large-grain production potential.
Description
German breeding for Ukrainian fields: the debut of Stelian
In 2025, the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine was updated with a new entry — the winter wheat Stelian. This complex hybrid, developed by specialists from the renowned German company Strube D&S GmbH, is the result of extensive breeding work aimed at adapting to the challenging climatic conditions of Eastern Europe.
Geography and potential
The variety is officially recommended for cultivation in all key agro-climatic zones of Ukraine: the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya. Such a wide geographical range confirms the hybrid's plasticity, as it maintains productivity under varying moisture levels. Stelian is intended exclusively for grain production, making it a strategic choice for farmers focused on stable yields.
Morphological features
Stelian stands out among its peers due to its structure. The plant has an average height and a semi-prostrate habit. An important characteristic is the pronounced waxy bloom on the upper internode of the straw and the flag leaf, which serves as an additional protective barrier under heat stress. The ear is pyramidal in shape, lax, with a white or straw-yellow color, medium length, and small teeth at the apex.
Grain quality
Strube breeders paid special attention to the grain parameters. Stelian produces large, red-colored grains. The phenol reaction analysis shows moderate staining, indicating balanced biochemical properties. The long grain with an optimal length-to-width ratio ensures good grain test weight, which is critical for processing.
Technological profile
The variety is characterized by a late heading time, allowing the plant to effectively utilize spring and summer moisture. The structural features of the lower glume (wide shoulder, oval-lanceolate shape) and the strong pubescence on its outer surface highlight the ear's resistance to external factors. The absence of anthocyanin coloration in the coleoptile and the weak pubescence of the upper straw node are markers of line purity established by German breeders.

Dual-purpose hybrids: for silage and grain in all growing regions. These are "stay-green" type hybrids, meaning the plants remain green for a longer period. However, this does not affect the sugar, cellulose, and hemicellulose content, nor the degree of lignification of the plant... |
