Sheshal is a new-generation winter soft wheat developed through individual selection from crossing the varieties Sheshopalovka and Stal'eva. It was officially released in 2020 for the steppe and forest-steppe zones of Ukraine and is characterized by high yield — on average 88.7 c/ha, which exceeds the standard of Sheshopalovka by 6.1 c. The vegetation period is 260-270 days, with ultrarapid heading and rapid ripening. The ear is large, medium-length and dense, with white awns and yellow color at maturity. The stem is strong, medium-thickness, 85-90 cm tall, with a dense, upright plant habit. Leaves are green, medium-sized, with well-developed waxy coating.
The grain of the Sheshal variety is large, with 1000-grain weight varying from 45 to 60 grams. It is characterized by high gluten content (30-32%) and protein (15-16%), ensuring high flour and bread quality. Flour strength reaches 400 arbitrary units, and bread volume from 100 g of flour is approximately 1100 cm³, confirmed by an overall bread score of 9 points. The variety is universal, suitable for all regions of Ukraine and occupies an intermediate position between parent varieties, combining their best qualities.
Sheshal exhibits high resistance to soil and air drought, heat tolerance, and winter hardiness. It is resistant to lodging and root rot, and more responsive to fertilizers and protective treatments compared to parent varieties. The variety is well-adapted to various climatic conditions, capable of thriving under insufficient fertilizer and moisture levels, making it a reliable choice for farmers aiming for high yield and product quality.
