Tulip Koningin Wilhelmina

Status and Character

The 'Koningen Wilhelmina' (Queen Wilhelmina) variety is a quintessential Darwin hybrid that blends vintage charm with the rugged resilience typical of mid-20th-century breeding. Unlike modern ultra-decorative cultivars that often require intensive care, this tulip focuses on structural integrity and long-lasting performance.

Visual Profile

The color palette is warm and inviting: a rich orange base that transitions into a golden yellow glow at the petal edges. This subtle gradient avoids the neon harshness of newer hybrids, making it a perfect choice for cottage-style landscapes and traditional spring garden beds.

Key Strengths

• Height and Stature: As a tall-growing variety, it acts as an excellent anchor for layered garden beds.
• Bloom Timing: Its mid-season bloom acts as a bridge between early-flowering simple tulips and later, more exotic varieties.
• Hardiness: Like most Darwin hybrids, this variety is highly resistant to viral infections and erratic spring weather fluctuations.

Who is this for?

'Koningen Wilhelmina' is the go-to choice for gardeners tired of finicky varieties that require constant lifting and babying. It is optimal for:

• Landscape architects designing public park spaces.
• Home gardeners who prioritize low-maintenance perennials with high visual impact.
• 'Wild' meadow-style garden plantings where consistent, year-over-year blooming is required.

Despite its robust nature, this tulip demands a sunny spot. In shady areas, the intensity of its fiery orange tones fades, and the stem can become excessively lanky, losing the rigid posture that makes the variety so sought after.
