Tulip Black Parrot

Iconic Elegance: The Enduring Appeal of Black Parrot

Among the vast array of bulbous plants, Black Parrot stands in a class of its own. Introduced in 1937, this legendary member of the Parrot tulip group has stood the test of time, becoming a symbol of dramatic elegance in modern landscaping. Its enduring popularity stems from its unique petal structure, which mimics the ruffled plumage of an exotic bird, offering an eccentric alternative to traditional tulip forms.

Botanical Profile and Features

The visual impact of this cultivar is built on its deep, moody, ink-purple hues with subtle maroon undertones. Its characteristic fringed, twisted, and curled lilac petals create an expressive silhouette that immediately draws the eye.

• Group: Parrot.
• Bloom Time: Late (May).
• Height: Medium, making it versatile for layering in garden beds.

Agricultural and Design Application

Due to its late-season blooming, Black Parrot is an excellent choice for extending the spring display in the garden. In professional horticulture, it is highly valued as an accent plant within monochromatic arrangements or as a high-contrast companion to white or golden yellow varieties. With stems of medium height, the plant offers enough structural integrity for mixed borders and makes a striking cut flower, where the dramatic geometry of the petals can be observed up close.
