Tulip Abba

Early season brilliance: Why Abba stands out among double tulips

The 'Abba' tulip is designed for gardeners who want early, vibrant color without the typical maintenance hurdles. As a member of the early double tulip class, this variety acts as a true herald of spring. Its main distinction is the incredible density of its blooms—when fully open, the flower resembles a lush peony while maintaining a compact, weather-resistant stature that defies erratic spring conditions.

Built-in health: Resilience against soil-borne pathogens

A common pain point for tulip enthusiasts is the susceptibility of bulbs to fungal infections. 'Abba' differentiates itself from many aesthetic-focused varieties through its robust genetic resistance:

• Fusarium and Verticillium Wilt: these common bulb killers are kept at bay, significantly reducing the need for intensive fungicide programs.
• Cladosporium and Root-knot Nematodes: the breeding focus on this variety provides superior protection for the root system against soil-dwelling pests.
• Spotted Wilt Virus: added peace of mind for those growing tulips in mixed borders alongside other vegetables or ornamentals.

Who is the 'Abba' tulip for?

The 'Abba' is an optimal choice for both private garden owners and professional landscapers. Its medium height makes it an excellent fit for the front of the border or container gardening, where taller varieties might struggle with wind exposure. Despite its medium stature, the plant features a sturdy stem that supports the heavy, deep red, double-petaled head without bending or snapping. This tulip requires minimal specialized care, making it an accessible choice for beginners who want a predictable, high-impact spring display. If you are looking for a reliable, low-maintenance tulip that delivers bold red color early in the season, 'Abba' is the gold standard.
