Alpine timothy (Phleum alpinum L.) – a perennial grass-like plant of the Poaceae family. The plant features erect, ascending shoots with alternate leaf arrangement. Leaves are simple, lanceolate, and linear, sessile, with sheath attachment; they have a sharp edge and a smooth base.
Inflorescences are spikes, where flowers are greenish with brown and red tints. Individual flowers reach up to 1 cm in size. Fruits are dry caryopses colored brown and yellow.
Alpine timothy prefers sunny locations: meadows, subalpine and alpine meadows, rocky areas, lakes, rivers, tundra, edges, and clearings. The plant is a mesophyte and oligotroph, resistant to moisture and light. As a fodder plant, it is widely used in agriculture.
