Sugar beet Medea

Stable Yields Without Excessive Fungicide Use

When working with the "Medea" hybrid from the Austrian breeder Saatbau, the first thing you notice is its predictability. For any agronomist, sugar beet production often carries the risk of a late-summer "disease storm," where field access becomes impossible while leaves begin to wither. With this hybrid, the situation is different: it maintains a level of protection that allows for significant savings on fungicide applications.

Leaf Health as a Key Success Factor

What truly stands out in the field is the robust foliage. Resistance to cercospora, powdery mildew, and rot isn't just a marketing claim—it's a practical way to preserve leaf surface area until harvest. Under typical field conditions, "Medea" demonstrates an impressive immunity against a wide spectrum of pathogens:

• Full readiness to withstand alternaria and verticillium wilt.
• High resistance to mycosphaerella leaf spot and phoma leaf spot.
• Minimal risk of brown spot development.
• A reliable barrier against a complex of rots, including white and gray mold.

Practical Growing Experience

Sowing "Medea" requires standard protocols, yet it shows excellent growth vigor during the initial stages. During the vegetation period, the hybrid is not demanding, responds well to fertilizer applications, and maintains a uniform stand density. Harvesting is straightforward: the roots have a consistent shape and lift cleanly from the soil, minimizing losses during mechanized harvest. It is a highly technological product for those who prioritize high yields while keeping crop protection costs under control.
