Sugar beet MARSUPIAL SMART

The Genetic Basis of Productivity

The “Marsupial Smart” hybrid from the Belgian breeding company Sesvanderhave Nv/Sa is a diploid sugar beet form designed to achieve an optimal balance between yield capacity and sugar accumulation. As a Normal (NZ) type, this hybrid demonstrates stable performance under moderate mineral nutrition conditions, positioning it as a reliable instrument for professional agronomy.

Phytopathological Resistance as a Profit Driver

The core value of “Marsupial Smart” lies in its selective protection profile. In the context of modern intensive agriculture, where soil pathogen pressure is steadily increasing, the hybrid's resistance to key diseases is a critical factor for success:

• Rhizomania: Genetic resistance to the Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus (BNYVV) allows for deployment in high-risk fields, effectively preventing crop failure.
• Cercospora leaf spot: A high tolerance level to Cercospora beticola significantly reduces the reliance on intensive fungicide programs, preventing early defoliation and maintaining photosynthetic potential until the end of the vegetation period.

Agronomic Implications of Diploidy

The choice of a diploid ploidy type is justified by the physiological growth patterns of the root crop. Sesvanderhave diploids ensure more uniform germination and field emergence, which is essential for efficient mechanical harvesting. By minimizing the occurrence of bolting and ensuring consistent early-stage development, the hybrid yields a crop with homogeneous weight and sugar content, streamlining logistics and factory processing efficiency.
