Spinach KALADONIA

The Technological Edge of Caladonia Spinach

The breeding work conducted by Monsanto (Seminis Vegetable Seeds) on the Caladonia hybrid was specifically aimed at solving the primary challenge of industrial spinach production: pathogen vulnerability while maintaining high commercial quality. This hybrid is the result of extensive selection focused on stabilizing leaf characteristics under intensive cultivation conditions.

Phytopathological Resistance as a Basis for Profitability

The core technical feature of Caladonia is its built-in genetic resistance to downy mildew (Peronospora farinosa f. sp. spinaciae). In field conditions, this represents a shift from reactive protection (frequent fungicide applications) to a proactive approach. For the agronomist, this is crucial: it reduces the pesticide load on the crop, simplifies phytosanitary compliance, and lowers production costs by reducing the number of sprayer passes required during the growing season.

Morphology and Marketable Quality

The leaf blades of Caladonia possess a deep, dark green hue, indicating high chlorophyll content. This attribute ensures not only a premium appearance at the retail level but also improved shelf life during distribution. The leaf structure is engineered for mechanical harvesting: the optimal tissue density minimizes damage during cutting, which directly impacts the net percentage of marketable yield per hectare.

• Optimized for high-volume conveyor production.
• Significant reduction in fungicide expenditure due to resistance to downy mildew.
• High-density dark green leaf rosette.
