Grain sorghum variety A 149 is a low-growing line with early heading. The panicle of this variety is symmetrical, short, and dense at maturity, with a short neck. Spikelet glumes are long and dark brown at maturity, with little to no awn development on the lower floral glume. The grain is round, with a grayish grain coat at maturity and low tannin content. The endosperm is predominantly starchy and yellow, which is characteristic of this variety. A feature of the variety is the absence or very weak expression of anthocyanin pigmentation in the coleoptile and yellow pigmentation in the midrib of the flag leaf, as well as the anthers. These traits indicate specific genetic characteristics of the variety, which may affect its resistance and adaptation to growing conditions. The variety is included in the State Register of the Russian Federation, confirming its breeding value and suitability for cultivation. Sorghum breeding methods used to create varieties such as A 149 include individual and family-group selection, hybridization on a fertile basis, self-pollination, creation of heterotic hybrids, intercrossing, use of sterile lines, as well as mutagenesis and polyploidy. These approaches allow obtaining varieties with improved agronomic characteristics, adapted to various growing conditions and usage purposes.
