Red sorrel – a decorative perennial plant up to 40–50 cm high, which attracts attention with bright green leaves with contrasting red veins and sometimes burgundy petioles. Leaves are oval‑elongated, pointed at the top, and the stem at the base can have a rich red or burgundy hue.
This unpretentious plant grows well on various soil types and in a wide range of climatic conditions. It is not afraid of flooding, so it is perfect for planting near water bodies, as well as as a border plant in decorative gardens and vegetable gardens. Care for it is simple: soil loosening, weed removal, regular watering, and timely removal of flower stalks to maintain dense foliage.
Red sorrel varieties are valued not only as decoration, but also as a useful food product. Young leaves are rich in vitamins C and B, carotene and organic acids, so they are used in soups, salads, canning, and in the preparation of first courses. For better taste, it is recommended to use fresh young leaves, as well as remove flower stalks so that the plant remains decorative and tasty.
