Malachite is a perennial rhubarb of an early-ripening variety that quickly yields a crop in the first year after transplanting. Petioles reach a length of up to 50 cm and a width of 2–2.5 cm, with a mass of 200–250 g. Thanks to their dense flesh and rich green color, they are especially valued as fresh greens, as well as in cooking: compotes, jellies, pies with fillings, soups, and beverages.
This variety has high yields – from 4.5 to 4.7 kg of petioles per square meter. For optimal growth, planting one or two plants per square meter is recommended, and when sowing seeds – a depth of 2 cm and a density of 80×80 cm. The period from regrowth to technical maturity is about 30–35 days, which allows for the first harvest as early as May.
Malachite is distinguished by its resistance to diseases and frost hardiness, making it easy to grow both in open ground and under domestic conditions. This makes the variety a popular choice for gardeners who wish to obtain a reliable source of vitamin C and tasty greens without extra trouble.
