Kilian is a medium-maturing stalk celery variety intended for open-field cultivation and suitable for all growing seasons. The plant forms uniform, smooth, well-filled stalks of light green shade with a slight depression. The stalks have a pleasant sweet taste and aroma that is preserved both fresh and after thermal processing. The variety differs in high yield and is suitable for both fresh market and industrial processing.
Kilian is characterized by high resistance to bolting and septoria, which ensures crop stability and facilitates plant care. The plant forms vertical stalks with a minimal number of side shoots, which facilitates harvesting and improves the product appearance. The optimal planting density is 8-10 plants per square meter, which is associated with intensive development and the formation of about ten large stems in a rosette.
For successful cultivation of Kilian, it is recommended to plant seedlings in warm, loose, fertile soil with a neutral pH level. An important condition is regular and abundant watering to maintain constant soil moisture, as well as conducting several top-dressings during the season. Additional measures are required for soil loosening after watering, weed control, and pest control. The variety tolerates dry conditions well, has good transportability and a long storage period, which makes it profitable for commercial cultivation.
