Rye Levitan

A Benchmark of Ukrainian Breeding

The winter rye variety "Levitan," developed by the National Scientific Center "Institute of Agriculture of the NAAS," is a cornerstone of mid-season winter cereal production in Ukraine. Designed to excel within the diverse climatic zones of the country, this variety combines consistent productivity with the robust agronomic traits required by modern commercial farming operations.

Agronomic Resilience and Disease Shield

What sets "Levitan" apart in a competitive market is its sophisticated defense mechanism against major pathogens. The breeders at the Institute of Agriculture have optimized its genetic resistance profile, specifically targeting threats that historically compromise rye yields:

• Snow mold, which is a major factor in overwintering success;
• Brown rust and stem rust;
• Powdery mildew.

Beyond its phytosanitary stability, the variety is highly valued for its exceptional resistance to lodging. Even under high-input agricultural regimes where nitrogen rates are optimized for yield, the stalk remains resilient. This allows producers to manage their crops with greater precision, maximizing nitrogen efficiency without the fear of crop failure due to lodging.

Market Role and Application

As a mid-season variety, "Levitan" offers a balanced biological lifecycle that fits seamlessly into various crop rotation schemes. Its performance consistency makes it a preferred choice for both flour milling and livestock feed production. By choosing this variety, Ukrainian farmers are opting for a localized, proven genotype that mitigates environmental and pathological risks, ensuring a reliable and profitable harvest season after season.
