Local variety of quince, a folk selection from Dagestan, originating from Buiynaksk (northern foothill subzone). Widespread in the foothill zone of the Republic of Dagestan. Cultivated in the North Caucasus region (throughout Dagestan, except for the northern plain subzone and southern mountain valley subzone of the mountainous zone of the Republic of Dagestan).
Medium-sized tree with rounded or occasionally flat-rounded crown. Bears fruit on current-year generative shoots located on simple and compound fruiting branches and fruiting twigs.
Shoots are long, medium-thick, slightly curved, slightly knotted, greenish. Leaves are large, broadly egg-shaped, wrinkled, entire-edged, dark green. Petiole is short and thick; stipules are large and egg-shaped.
Fruits are above-average size, average weight 282 g (maximum 700 g), cylindrical or pear-shaped, slightly ribbed, light-yellow base color. Peduncle of medium thickness; calyx is large and open; subcalyx tube is large, vase-shaped; seed chambers are large and closed; seeds are large, egg-shaped, occasionally unequal-sided, well-formed; central cavity is large, spear-shaped, tapering toward the subcalyx tube. Flesh is yellow, dense, slightly fibrous, slightly sour-sweet, pleasant taste.
Ripening period is late-winter (fruit becomes harvest-ready in the second half of October).
Fruits are consumed fresh until early March and used for preparing high-quality preserves (compote, jam).
Self-fertile, early-bearing, begins fruiting at 4-5 years. High yield (156-200 tons/ha), fruits annually. Fruit attachment on the tree is strong. Rootstock trees grow better than grafted ones. Easily propagated by grafting, layering, and root suckers. Cold-hardy and resistant to fungal diseases.
Advantages of the variety: early-bearing, high yield, cold-hardiness, resistance to fungal diseases, self-fertility, large fruit size, good fruit preservation qualities, high adaptability.
Disadvantages of the variety: not very high fruit flavor quality.
The variety is of interest for breeding as a source of early-bearing, high-yield, cold-hardiness (only under Dagestan conditions), resistance to fungal diseases, self-fertility, large fruit size, good fruit preservation qualities, adaptability.
