Pumpkin Vasilisa

A Breakthrough in Gourd Breeding: 'Vasilisa' Pumpkin

The 'Vasilisa' variety is the result of extensive breeding work carried out by the All-Russian Research Institute of Irrigated Vegetable and Melon Growing in collaboration with Sergey Dmitrievich Sokolov. This butternut squash (musk pumpkin) has carved out a distinct niche for itself among compact, high-yield varieties suitable for both private gardening and commercial farming.

The defining feature of this model is its bush growth habit. Unlike vining varieties that require extensive space, 'Vasilisa' allows for highly efficient land utilization, which is essential for growers with limited plot capacity. Its compact size does not sacrifice biological productivity, as the variety consistently produces marketable fruits weighing between 1 and 5 kg.

Agronomic Features and Applications

• Biological Type: Butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata), known for high carotene and sugar content.
• Growth Habit: Bush-type, which simplifies maintenance, harvesting, and minimizes damage to neighboring crops.
• Weight Characteristics: The variety offers fruit versatility, ranging from small individual servings (1–2 kg) to larger specimens (3–5 kg).

Developed with the expertise of renowned specialists Konstantin Efimovich Dyutin and Taisia Vasilievna Sokolenko, 'Vasilisa' is designed to meet high culinary standards. The butternut type ensures excellent performance in various cooking applications; the dense, aromatic flesh makes it a favorite for both home kitchens and professional food processing. The patent is held by Sergey Dmitrievich Sokolov and the participating research institute, confirming the variety's significant breeding value.

In the market, 'Vasilisa' is regarded as a dependable choice for temperate and southern climates. Its reputation rests on predictable results: farmers benefit from a plant that is easy to manage during the growing season, offers high fruit marketability, and possesses excellent storage longevity, a critical factor for planning distribution through the autumn and winter months.
