Potato variety Giant is a table variety of medium maturity developed in Russia by specialists of the All-Russian Research Institute of Potato Growing named after A.G. Lorh. This variety is characterized by high yield, ranging from 290 to 425 centners per hectare, as well as an average tuber mass of 104–143 grams. Tubers have an oval-round shape, light beige skin, and creamy flesh, making them attractive to consumers and convenient for preparing various dishes, including mashed potatoes.
Giant is not demanding in terms of soil and climatic conditions, preferring sunny locations for planting. The maturation period is approximately 80–100 days, allowing for a stable harvest in middle climatic zones. The root system of this variety is strong, contributing to good plant development and resilience. Additionally, the variety has good storability, which is important for storage and transportation of the harvest.
The variety is resistant to several common potato diseases, including late blight, mosaic virus, leaf curl virus, and phytophthora. However, it is susceptible to golden cyst nematode, requiring attention when selecting planting sites and implementing agronomic measures. Due to its characteristics, Giant potato is suitable for both table consumption and industrial mashed potato production.
