Physalis «Jam» is an annual plant from the nightshade family that grows quickly and reaches a height of 1 to 1.6 meters. Its strongly branched shoots create a dense bush structure, and fruits are formed in a large number of ovaries. The variety is distinguished by high cold resistance: it withstands temperature drops to -2 °C perfectly and can be grown both in open ground and greenhouses in all regions where tomatoes grow.
The fruits of Physalis «Jam» are large, weighing from 50 to 80 grams, enclosed in a husk of fused sepals. Upon reaching biological maturity, the husk dries out and bursts, revealing light-yellow berries. They are elastic, juicy, possess a bright sweet-sour taste and a fruity-berries aroma. Due to their high gelling ability, fruits are easily turned into jams, preserves, candied fruits, and sauces, such as salsa.
These berries are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, minerals (potassium, manganese, magnesium), fiber, and pectin. They possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, making them beneficial for health. Physalis can be consumed fresh, stored in its natural husk in a dry cool place for several months, as well as frozen or dried. For cultivation, regular watering, shallow sowing of seeds (about 1 cm), and preliminary treatment with a manganese solution for improved germination are recommended.
