Physalis Lantern

The Aesthetics of the Autumn Garden

The 'Likhtaryk' (Lantern) variety, developed by breeders at the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden, is a classic ornamental physalis that has become a true staple of floral compositions. Unlike edible varieties, this cultivar focuses entirely on visual impact, transforming the bush into a cluster of vibrant, papery 'Chinese lanterns'.

Key Features and Cultivation

Reaching a height of 50-70 cm, the plant is ideal for both the foreground and middle ground of flower beds. Its fruit—bright orange calyxes containing a small berry—retains its shape and saturated color for a long time, making it an excellent choice for dried flower arrangements and winter decor.

• Sunlight Needs: Performs best in open, sunny locations, where the color of the 'lanterns' becomes maximally intense.
• Care: Requires average maintenance. It is important to ensure moderate watering during dry spells, as the root system of this physalis is quite vigorous.
• Vigor: Like most members of this genus, 'Likhtaryk' tends to spread rapidly. It is recommended to restrict its growing area to prevent it from encroaching on other plants in the garden.

Who is this variety for?

'Likhtaryk' is the perfect choice for gardeners looking for an undemanding crop with high ornamental value for cut flowers. It is forgiving for beginners but requires spatial management. Its main strength is the exceptional durability of its dried calyxes, which can last until the following season. Please note that this variety is not intended for human consumption—an important consideration for families with small children.
